TOKYO, JAPAN — IHG Hotels & Resorts has begun construction on its largest new-build hotel project in Japan, an 817-key triple-branded development near Universal Studios Japan (USJ), in partnership with Sakurajima Kaihatsu LLC, a consortium led by Kajima Corporation. Scheduled to open in 2029, the project marks IHG’s first triple-branded hotel in the country.
The development will feature InterContinental (244 keys), Kimpton (246 keys), and Holiday Inn Resort (327 keys), all within walking distance or a short boat ride from USJ and the upcoming Integrated Resort in Yumeshima. The properties will be the only internationally branded hotels in the area, offering visitors luxury, boutique, and family-friendly options.
“This project represents a major growth milestone for IHG and our partners,” said Abhijay Sandilya, Managing Director, Japan & Micronesia, IHG Hotels & Resorts. “Guests will enjoy direct access to Universal Studios Japan and a wide selection of experiences, from luxury stays to family-friendly fun.”
Kwatsunori Ichihashi, Senior Executive Officer of Kajima Corporation, added: “Partnering with IHG brings world-class hospitality to the Osaka riverfront, enhancing the visitor experience and establishing the area as a must-visit destination.”
The hotels will complement IHG’s existing Osaka portfolio, supported by infrastructure upgrades including the JR Sakurajima Line extension, new ferry terminals, and Kansai International Airport’s expanded capacity.
