Japan’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to balance tradition, innovation, and world-class hospitality. During the Golden Week celebrations, we experienced this blend firsthand through stays at two of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ premier Japanese properties — InterContinental Osaka and ANA InterContinental Tokyo.
Our first stop brought us to InterContinental Osaka, located in the sleek Umeda district, Osaka’s bustling commercial and transportation hub often regarded as the city’s sophisticated urban center. Occupying part of the four-tower Grand Front Osaka lifestyle complex, the hotel features 215 guest rooms and 57 luxury residences designed for both short leisure stays and long-term living.
The hotel marked its 10th anniversary in 2023 and is currently undergoing a phased renovation of all guestrooms, further enhancing its luxury offerings while maintaining the refined elegance and comfort that have defined the property since its opening.
Grand Front Osaka is seamlessly connected to JR Osaka Station through a walkway bridge, the hotel places guests at the center of Osaka’s vibrant city life while remaining surprisingly calm and refined. Nearby attractions include the iconic Umeda Sky Building, HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel, and the Umeda Arts Theater, making the property an ideal base for both first-time and returning visitors.
Refined Arrival, Art, Space, and Japanese Warmth
First impressions are shaped by the arrival experience, and InterContinental Osaka immediately delivers a sense of understated sophistication. Guests are welcomed at the ground-level driveway by a bilingual doorman before being escorted to the hotel lobby on the 20th floor. What stood out to me was how seamlessly he went beyond his role — offering the warmth, attentiveness, and intuition of a seasoned concierge. It was a thoughtful gesture that made the arrival feel all the more personal and refined.
Bathed in natural light from expansive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Osaka’s modern skyline and the Yodogawa River, the lobby exudes warmth and quiet elegance. Contemporary interiors blend seamlessly with subtle Japanese design elements, creating a space that feels upscale without being intimidating.
Among the lobby’s most striking features are two prominent art installations: “THE GUEST” and the Ebisu-sama sculptures.
Displayed in vibrant colors, “THE GUEST” are iconic Lladró porcelain creations by acclaimed Spanish artist Jaime Hayon. Their playful, doll-like appearance amusingly recalls Young Hee, the giant doll from Netflix’s Squid Game.
More than whimsical decorative pieces, however, “THE GUEST” sculptures symbolize personality and human character — welcoming figures that instantly capture upon arrival and while during the check-in experience. During the Christmas season, the hotel even dresses the iconic installations in Santa-inspired outfits, adding a playful festive charm to the chic atmosphere.
Equally eye-catching are the Ebisu-sama sculptures inspired by the Shinto god of prosperity and good fortune. Crafted from cast materials and layered in vibrant rainbow stripes, the abstract installation injects energy and color into the thoughtfully designed lobby space while reflecting Osaka’s playful spirit.
A Room Designed for Comfort
We stayed in a King Premium City View with Club Lounge access. Guestrooms at InterContinental Osaka average 50 square meters, while the luxury residences range from 72 to 165 square meters, thoughtfully designed for families and long-staying guests.
Elegance best defines the room’s overall character. Contemporary interiors are complemented by traditional Japanese touches — from warm wooden flooring and stone accents to shoji-inspired details subtly woven into the furnishings and fabrics, linens and towels. The spacious bathroom, separated by floor-to-ceiling glass walls, creates an open and airy atmosphere enhanced by a book-matched Calacatta-style marble with bold gray veining and a polished finished.
For travelers who appreciate thoughtfully designed bathrooms, this one easily stands out. It features a freestanding soaking tub, rain shower, Japanese smart toilet, and luxurious BYREDO bath amenities whose sophisticated scents instantly elevated the experience.
The room is adorned with carefully curated details reflecting Japanese artistry and culture, including works by local illustrators and art pieces thoughtfully integrated into the interiors. Above the headboard hangs an intriguing doodle-inspired artwork whose meaning may easily go unnoticed unless explained. According to General Manager Jerome Palacoeur, the illustration subtly references Osaka’s identity as a city surrounded by rivers and once known as a major harbor for industrial trading and commerce.
Guests would also admire the traditional tea set, stone accents, and refined decorative touches that add warmth and authenticity to the space. Even the minibar, coffee machine, glassware, and cutlery are elegantly displayed behind glass-paneled shelving, reinforcing the hotel’s meticulous attention to detail and design.
Dining at the Heart of the Hotel
A defining feature of many luxury hotels is their culinary experience, and InterContinental Osaka takes this to another level through its exceptional dining concepts. Leading its impressive portfolio is Pierre, the hotel’s Michelin-starred French restaurant, which proudly retained its Michelin recognition for the 10th consecutive year in 2026.
One of the highlights of our stay was an exquisite six-course Spring Menu dinner at Pierre — a gastronomic journey worthy of a feature on its own, with a separate story coming soon. Each dish was beautifully plated and thoughtfully crafted, showcasing refined French techniques infused with seasonal Japanese ingredients.
Pierre is just one of the hotel’s six dining venues, all conveniently located on the 20th floor. Noka Roast & Grill offers an elevated all-day dining experience centered on premium meats and seasonal produce, while adee Lounge & Bar provides an intimate setting for cocktails overlooking Osaka’s glittering skyline. Lounge 3-60 pairs panoramic city views with afternoon tea and light bites, while STRESSED, the hotel’s stylish patisserie, tempts guests with artisanal pastries and desserts that are as visually stunning as they are indulgent.
The hotel also features four meeting and banquet venues for corporate gatherings, social events, and weddings, complemented by dedicated wedding facilities including a chapel, bridal salon, wedding boutique, beauty salon, and photo studio.
Wellness in the Middle of the City
A dip in a traditional Japanese onsen should always be part of any Japan itinerary — a soothing reward for tired legs after averaging 10,000 steps of walking daily. Unfortunately, our tight schedule prevented us from fully experiencing the hotel’s wellness facilities, including its indoor pool, award-winning Japanese bathhouse, and Meguri Spa & Wellness center. The property also houses one of the largest hotel gyms in Osaka.
Service remains one of InterContinental Osaka’s strongest assets. During breakfast service, even as the restaurant filled with guests, the staff operated with remarkable efficiency using discreet communication headsets that kept the entire operation running seamlessly. Dishes were replenished without fail while personalized service remained consistent throughout the stay.
According to General Manager Jerome, the hotel embraces what he describes as “less intimidating luxury,” where the focus is centered on comfort, experience, and authentic hospitality.
“We have a good base of luxury guests ever since we opened 13 years ago. The luxury offering is focused on the guest experience. Every hotel is beautiful, every hotel has their own identity for everyone,” he shared.
Shopping and Insider Expertise
Shopping also becomes effortless at InterContinental Osaka. Located adjacent to Grand Front Osaka, guests enjoy direct access to more than 260 shops and restaurants offering everything from international luxury brands and Japanese fashion labels to cosmetics, electronics, homeware, gadgets, and specialty souvenirs. Beyond the complex, independent boutiques and hidden local stores further elevate Umeda’s reputation as one of Osaka’s premier shopping districts.
For Filipino travelers whose Japan itineraries often revolve around gastronomy, seasonal sightseeing, and exploratory shopping, InterContinental Osaka offers an experience that feels both sophisticated and approachable through its curated “Insider Expertise” program, where the concierge team acts as cultural curators crafting bespoke local experiences. Guests are offered immersive encounters that go beyond typical sightseeing. Among these are the traditional Omotesenke-style tea ceremony at Kyoto’s serene Isshin-an teahouse in Arashiyama, a hands-on knife-making experience with fifth-generation blacksmith Tadashi Enami in Sakai City, the refined art of kintsugi or golden pottery restoration at Hyouboudou, and sake tasting sessions at the historic Amano Brewery in Osaka Prefecture, where centuries-old brewing traditions continue to thrive. Guided by the hotel’s knowledgeable Insiders, these thoughtfully curated activities allow guests to discover a deeper, more authentic side of Japan through meaningful and memorable cultural connections.
Within the broader portfolio of Intercontinental Hotels Group, InterContinental Osaka embodies the brand’s evolving towards modern, culturally immersive luxury and its expanding presence across Japan. The property stands as a strong example of IHG’s localization strategy—blending international luxury standards with authentic Japanese experiences alongside the Michelin-starred culinary adventure.
