#ZeroHunger: Makati Shangri-La Manila celebrates World Food Day 2019

Manila, October 16, 2019 – Makati Shangri-La, Manila celebrates World Food Day 2019 in partnership with MNL Growkits. With the annual theme of #ZeroHunger, the hotel focuses on simple yet sustainable efforts by launching its own in-house herb garden in which intends to supply most of the hotel’s kitchen requirements in 3 years’ time. Moreover, the hotel also promotes planting and gardening at the comfort of your own home by conducting demo and sharing simple recipes using herbs and vegetables.

World Food Day is observed every 16th of October 2019 in more than 150 countries, having the goal to create a hunger-free world by 2030 by raising awareness on the issues behind poverty and global hunger. Running on its third year, Makati Shangri-La, Manila has been the only hotel in the Philippines to adopt and take active participation in this global movement since 2017, championed by Mr. Udo Wittich, Makati Shangri-La’s hotel manager and Chef Nicola Canuti, the hotel’s executive chef.

With 800 million people worldwide still going hungry despite producing enough food, promoting the knowledge for agricultural practices can improve food supply, one individual at a time. This year, Makati Shangri-La, Manila introduces planting and gardening in households and indoors by creating its own herb garden found in your own home.

Makati Shangri-la, Manila has partnered with MNL Growkits, a team of millennials inspired to create vital changes in the urban gardening scene. This organization is the first in the Philippines to offer organic plant kits, undergoing the same process of developing sprouts as farmers and growers do. Year on year, the hotel has been constantly increasing its demand for locally-sourced produce. With the help of MNL Growkits, the hotel will be launching its very own herb garden for the very first time, envisioned to supply the majority of the hotel’s food requirements in the following years.

MNL Growkits will have a pop-up merchandise booth in Circles Events Café (CEC) from October 14 to 20, 2019. During this period, these herbs and vegetables will also be highlighted at the healthy station of CEC, specially prepared by Chef Nicola Canuti. You can also catch a live demonstration and lessons at CEC with your kids on how to plant your own seeds whenever you book Makati Shangri-La, Manila’s family staycation package.,Wonderful Weekends, MNL Growkits live gardening demonstrations will be available every afternoon on October 19, 20, and 26, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Makati Shangri-La, Manila supports campaigns for sustainability and the environment. By launching its own herb garden, the long-term goal of this project is to source organic produce from garden to table—ranging from herbs, vegetables, sprouts, and fruits—and encourage sustainable agricultural practices as well as provide a higher-quality cuisine to guests and diners. Little by little, one positive action leads to another—this is how Makati Shangri-La, Manila helps the community and the environment grow together.
