Microtel Inns & Suites (Pilipinas), Inc. has acquired the master franchise of the international hotel brand TRYP by Wyndham for the Philippines. The brand’s first property will be opened within the Mall of Asia complex in December 2015.

A Wyndham Hotel Group brand just like Microtel, TRYP originated from Spain and has expanded to main cities in Europe and South America. While Microtel falls under the economy hotel category, TRYP is considered an upper midscale hotel.

It has the tagline, “Own the City,” and boasts the Plaza Central — its own take on hotel lobbies. Plaza Central is designed as a social place for guests, having its own coffee shop and bar for drinks, tapas, and snacks. Its website described the brand as a “select-service urban hotel” that “encourages you to get out and enjoy the city, socialize and live life to the fullest.”

“It’s a deliberate strategy to offer more choices; to cater to the growing sophistication of both guests as well as the hotel owners. Like when you’re dining out, you can’t have comfort food all the time (a Microtel); sometimes you want to have something more exciting like a paella  Valenciana (a TRYP hotel),” said Jose Mari del Rosario, president of Microtel Inns & Suites (Pilipinas), in an email correspondence with Hospitality News.

In February, Microtel disclosed that it is aiming for 25 hotels nationwide by 2016. The company has recently opened its 13th hotel in Quezon City. Two of the 25 properties will be under TRYP, said del Rosario, while also hinting that the company’s target will likely increase since it is mulling to develop eight to 10 TRYP hotels in the Philippines.
